Gorilla Trekking

Face to Face with the Gentle Giants of the Mist

There are few moments in life that truly take your breath away. Standing just meters from a mountain gorilla—watching a silverback protect his family, observing a mother gently groom her infant, locking eyes with one of our closest living relatives—is one of them.

Gorilla trekking is not a zoo visit. It is a raw, humbling, and deeply moving experience that takes you into the heart of the misty rainforests of East Africa. Every trek is different. Every encounter is unique.

At West Tours Uganda, we’ve been guiding travelers into the gorilla sanctuaries of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park for over a decade. We know the trails, the gorilla families, and the local communities better than anyone. We don’t just take you there—we prepare you for the profound connection that awaits.

Highlight

Home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the crown jewel of Uganda’s gorilla trekking. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a ancient rainforest, teeming with biodiversity. Trekking here is an immersive experience—you’ll push through thick vegetation, climb steep slopes, and eventually find yourself in the presence of a gorilla family in their natural habitat.

The park offers both standard gorilla trekking (1 hour with the gorillas) and the exclusive gorilla habituation experience (4 hours with a gorilla family still being acclimatized to human presence). The habituation experience is only available in Uganda and offers a deeper, more intimate encounter

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, Mgahinga offers a unique trekking experience through bamboo and montane forest.

The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, and while it’s smaller than Bwindi, it offers a quieter, more intimate experience with fewer trekkers. Mgahinga is also a great base for combining gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking.

HighlightEasier access from Kigali, world-class lodges, and Dian Fossey’s legacy

Volcanoes National Park is perhaps the most famous gorilla trekking destination in the world, thanks in large part to the legacy of Dian Fossey, who studied gorillas here for decades. Today, the park is home to 10 habituated gorilla families, each visited by a maximum of eight people per day.

Trekking in Volcanoes NP is generally easier than in Bwindi, with shorter treks and more established trails. The park offers a premium experience, with luxury lodges, seamless logistics, and the option to extend your time with the gorillas through the Platinum Gorilla Experience.

Rwanda’s gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person—significantly more than Uganda—but the experience is known for its efficiency, luxury, and ease of access.
