Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the crown jewel of Uganda’s gorilla trekking. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a ancient rainforest, teeming with biodiversity. Trekking here is an immersive experience—you’ll push through thick vegetation, climb steep slopes, and eventually find yourself in the presence of a gorilla family in their natural habitat.
The park offers both standard gorilla trekking (1 hour with the gorillas) and the exclusive gorilla habituation experience (4 hours with a gorilla family still being acclimatized to human presence). The habituation experience is only available in Uganda and offers a deeper, more intimate encounter

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, Mgahinga offers a unique trekking experience through bamboo and montane forest.
The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, and while it’s smaller than Bwindi, it offers a quieter, more intimate experience with fewer trekkers. Mgahinga is also a great base for combining gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking.

Volcanoes National Park is perhaps the most famous gorilla trekking destination in the world, thanks in large part to the legacy of Dian Fossey, who studied gorillas here for decades. Today, the park is home to 10 habituated gorilla families, each visited by a maximum of eight people per day.
Trekking in Volcanoes NP is generally easier than in Bwindi, with shorter treks and more established trails. The park offers a premium experience, with luxury lodges, seamless logistics, and the option to extend your time with the gorillas through the Platinum Gorilla Experience.
Rwanda’s gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person—significantly more than Uganda—but the experience is known for its efficiency, luxury, and ease of access.

A gorilla trekking permit is mandatory for every person participating in an official gorilla trek. Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Uganda and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in Rwanda.
